Theological Digest &
Outlook
Message from the Directors This combined March-September 2011 issue
is the last to be published in print by Church Alive. We
intend to maintain publication on our website,
www.churchalive.ca as long as
donors support that work. A second website,
www.christusvictor.ca , is
under construction and is meant for theological conversation
and dialogue.
For this last print issue, then, we
decided to follow the practice of the householder who brings
out of his treasures things new and old (Mt 13:52).
The new articles are Frank Lockhart’s
Theology and the Post-modern, Don Faris’s Abandoning
the Faith, Bruce J. Clemenger’s Faith Today
article, What Principles Sustain our Laws?,
Mark McDermott’s Strachan and Ryerson on Education,
David W. T. Brattson’s The Medicine of Immortality,
and Fr David Graham Scott’s review of Kurt Reinhardt’s book
of poetry entitled, My Light and my Salvation.
Dr Lockhart’s article is an introduction
to Church Alive’s new website,
www.chrustusvictor.ca
. Don Faris provides ten points in response to the New
Statement now called “A Song of Faith.” These points are
relevant in questioning the current remit to give the New
Creed (1968-1980) and A Song of Faith (2006) equal
status with the 1925 Basis of Union Doctrine of Twenty
Articles. Bruce Clemenger argues that if the principles
that affirm the dignity of human life are not affirmed and
nourished, they will be unable to sustain the life-affirming
institutions and policies that they undergird, such as
universal health care. In the light of the current Equality
policy of the McGuinty Government in Ontario, Dr McDermott’s
article provides important historical background as to how
we got there.
With regard to “old treasures,” Dr Philip
Cline chose 14 articles from previous issues from 1990 to
2010 that would be good to republish today. The issues from
1990 to 1996 were not on our website and could not be
reprinted. Of the ten articles on our website, limited
space required selection.
John James’ The Resurrected Jesus
from March 2007 was included because the resurrection is the
foundation of the Christian Gospel. Hugh Reid’s
Acknowledging our Place in a Pluralistic Society is his
revision of his March 2006 article. It and Greg
Smith-Young’s Response to Faith Talk II from the same
issue are good background for questioning the remit which
would give the New Creed and A Song of Faith equal status
with the 1925 Basis of Union Doctrine. Paul Miller’s
Editorial on Muslims and Christians from March 2002 is a
reminder that we Christians need to learn the art of simply
being unashamedly who we are. Philip Cline’s United
Church or Untied from the March 1998 issue provides
background for the momentous changes to that date.
We regret that Theological Digest & Outlook
must cease print publication. No one has agreed to become
the new Editor. Funds have decreased. We rely on our
donors to keep our websites operating. Donations are
tax-deductible. Church Alive has been a registered charity
since 1974.
From 1986 to 1990 TD&O was Theological Digest and held the
ISSN 0847-0065. In 1991 its name was amended to Theological
Digest & Outlook and the new ISSN is 1184-8901.
The reader might wish to look up the “old treasures” that Dr
Cline chose from previous issues from 1990 on. Here is his
list of the articles on this website:
March 2010, Paul Miller, “The Road Ahead for Renewal”
March 2007, John James, “The Resurrected Jesus”

any library would like to have them, they need only
ask. Initial enquiries can be sent to
